Special Sessions –
The Climate Emergency is Here – A Panel Discussion
LEARN MORE
SUNDAY, October 2, 2022 @ 0900 – 1000
Ballroom DEF, Westin Bayshore Hotel, Vancouver
Moderator: Dr. Gigi Osler, Winnipeg, MB
All-time heat records, historic droughts, and catastrophic flooding are devastating the world. The Climate Emergency is real and delaying climate action should no longer be an option. Halting global warming in the long term requires, at a minimum, that no additional CO2 emissions from human activities are added to the atmosphere. Health care is one of the most carbon-intensive industries, responsible for 4.5% of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide.
Learn from this outstanding international panel of experts on how the climate crisis is impacting communities in Canada, individual strategies to address climate change, and on how to achieve a low-carbon health care system.
Moderator
Dr. Gigi Osler (in person)

Mitigating Our Footprint
“Climate change is the ‘biggest global health threat of the 21st century’ and is causing an increase in heatwaves, wildfires, floods, droughts and crop failures, vector-borne diseases, mass migration, and is associated with an increase in air pollution. The evidence is unequivocal and the vast public health effects of the climate crisis mandate that the medical community reconsider its role in contributing to this global catastrophe.” Zotova, O., Petrin-Desrosiers, C., Gopferg, a. and Van Jove, M. (2020) Carbon-neutral medical conferences should be the norm. The Lancet [Post-print] (Vol 4, Issue 2) E48-E50; DIO;https://doi.org/10.1016/S2542-5196(20)30003-6
This year the CSOHNS is aiming for a carbon neutral annual meeting. We have introduced a number of environmental initiatives to help us lessen our impact on the planet:
CSO-HNS Carbon Offset Program
The purpose of this undertaking is to offset the unavoidable emissions from flights to the meeting. This will be done through monetary donations to several certified carbon offset projects in Canada. In addition, the Society will commit to covering the carbon emissions from the flights of the staff and invited guests. Delegates will be given an option on the registration form to purchase carbon offsets that will be put toward mitigating the CO2e associated with the annual meeting.
LEARN MORE
- Carbon offset projects are actions taken to directly offset the emissions of an activity.
- A certain amount of money can go towards taking out GHGs from the atmosphere OR attempt to mitigate GHG emissions that would otherwise be released if the project was not undertaken.
- Important to note that carbon offset projects are not a way to “pay your way” to emitting, but rather a way to avoid future emissions or sequester carbon to account for currently unavoidable emissions.
- It is key to reduce emissions over purchasing carbon offsets.
CSO-HNS Carbon Capture Projects
The Society has chosen to support these 3 carbon capture projects:
LEARN MORE
Niagara Escarpment Forest (Carbonzero – CSA Clean Projects Registry $30/tonne) The Escarpment Biosphere Conservancy is Ontario’s largest and Canada’s second largest land conservation agency, dedicated to preserving natural systems that house 58 of Ontario’s native species at risk or of concern. This project promotes and maintains the function and diversity of ecosystems along Ontario’s Niagara escarpment. The Niagara escarpment stretches from Niagara Falls towards Tobermory, and extends along Manitoulin Island. Project Profile
Nanaimo Landfill Methane Gas Capture Project (Carbonzero – CSA Clean Projects Registry $25/tonne) This project reduces greenhouse gas emissions by using the methane that was previously vented to the atmosphere as fuel for electricity. The Nanaimo LFG Capture Project is located approximately five km south of downtown Nanaimo, British Columbia. Read More
Coastal First Nations Great Bear Rainforest (BC Carbon Registry – ISO 14064-2 $30/tonne) In 2009, Coastal First Nations and the Province of British Columbia agreed to one of the largest carbon offset projects in existence. The Great Bear Rainforest is a global treasure that covers 6.4 million hectares on British Columbia’s north and central coast – equivalent in size to Ireland. All British Columbians have a stake in protecting it. The historic agreement that secures the future of the Great Bear Rainforest means more old- and second-growth forest will be protected, while still ensuring opportunities for economic development and jobs for local First Nations. Scalp Reconstruction and Dermal Regenerative Matrices
A Review and Analysis Utilizing Integra Dermal Regeneration Template (IDRT) in Complex Scalp Reconstruction
LEARN MORE
SALON 1 – 2nd Floor, Westin Bayshore Hotel
Session Description
Reconstructive strategies for the management of scalp wounds are varied and impacted by defect size, depth, quality of regional tissue and patient comorbidities. Whilst skin grafting, locoregional flaps and free vascularized tissue transfer remain staples in the surgeons’ arsenal of intervention for scalp reconstructon, these options may not be suitable for all patients.
Please join Dr. Stephen Kovach as he reviews the substantial body of evidence for the use of IDRT (Integra® Dermal Regeneration Template) to reconstruct complex scalp wounds and share the treatment algorithm for this patient population by the multidisciplinary team at UPENN.

Dark Secrets of Stanley Park Walking Tour
Sunday, October 2, 2022 – 10:15 a.m.
On the Dark Secrets of Stanley Park Tour you’ll discover the park you thought you knew has a remarkable – and oftentimes shocking – history. Until European settlers forced the eviction of Coast Salish people from their villages and homes, the land had supported indigenous communities for thousands of years. The creation of the park itself was the result of one of the murkiest real estate deals in Vancouver history (and that’s saying something!). And today the park remains home to settler smallpox cemeteries, bizarre public artwork, and true crime scenes. Plus you’ll hear the incredible story of Deadman’s Island! You’ll never see the park the same way again.
After the tour, lunch will be held at the Stanley Park Brewing Restaurant & Brewpub which offers a casual west coast-inspired menu, and new, innovative beers brewed on-site.
Meet in the lobby of the Westin Bayshore Hotel @ 10:15 a.m. Cost: $85/person
