Head & Neck Learning Module

Introduction

This section presents essential clinical knowledge about the structures contained in the head and neck.

The basic learning objectives agreed upon by the Canadian Society of Otolaryngologists & Head and Neck Surgeons are presented below. The most common and important head and neck-related complaints are presented in the Clinical Presentations of Head & Neck pathology section.  Specific conditions relating to these complaints are highlighted in the Conditions of the Head & Neck section.

Objectives

Basic Sciences

• Understand the anatomy, physiology, and histology of the salivary glands, thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, and the face & craniofacial skeleton.
• Develop and understanding of the embryological development and clinical significance of the branchial clefts

Clinical Presentations of Head & Neck Pathology

• Develop a clinical approach and differential diagnosis for the following complaints:
  • Neck Mass
  • Thyroid Disease
  • Skin Problems

Conditions of the Head & Neck

• Develop a basic understanding of the following conditions related to the auditory system:
  • Branchial Cleft Cyst / Sinus
  • Cervical Lymphadenitis
  • Dermoid Cyst
  • Facial Trauma
  • Head and Neck Cancer
  • Hyperparathyroidism
  • Sialadenitis
  • Sialolithiasis
  • Skin Cancer
  • Thyroglossal Duct Cyst
  • Thyroid Nodule

• Examination of skin
