2011 SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM

“Canadian Otolaryngology – Education and Outreach in the Developing World”

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

This meeting offers delegates the unique opportunity to learn from experts (academic and community) and share their own professional experience in various areas of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery. Participants are encouraged to critically evaluate conventional patient care and to challenge state-of-the-art management. This meeting will also introduce attendees to Canadian otolaryngology’s experiences with education and outreach in the Developing World.

The Society will …

  • offer podium and poster presentations of the most up-to-date clinical and scientific materials in the specialty of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery
  • present a variety of workshops, panels and subspecialty sessions, based on need assessments and to provide more focused subject matter in an interactive setting
  • provide a platform for constructive discussions on general otolaryngology as well as in subspecialty areas including head and neck oncology, laryngology, sinus disease, otology, neurotology, pediatric otolaryngology, facial cosmetic and reconstructive surgery and medical education.
  • promote an atmosphere of academic, professional and social interaction amoung Society members, allied health providers, honoured guests and corporate partners.

The 65th Annual Meeting qualifies for 22.5 category 1 credit hours under the Royal College’s Maintenance of Certification Program. In order to receive your certificate of attendance you must completed the evaluation booklet (in your delegate’s kit) and return it to either the onsite registration desk or by mail to the Society’s office.

NEW IN THIS YEAR’S PROGRAM…

The 65th Annual Meeting will have a slightly modified schedule. Each morning there will be a plenary session showcasing a different guest speaker. In addition, these plenary sessions will include talks by members on their international health initiatives as well as the top podium presentations. The opening session on Sunday, May 22, will include both the Presidential address and the Guest of Honour’s presentation.

FOR THE RESIDENTS

The Poliquin Resident’s Competition is scheduled for Monday, May 23 from 13:30 to 17:06. In addition, there will be a special workshop for residents and fellows on Tuesday, May 23 at 16:00, entitled “ENT Office Set-up, Effective Office Functioning and Link to Medical Education and the Developing World”.

ROYAL COLLEGE MAINTENANCE OF CERTIFICATION PROGRAM

The 65th Annual Meeting is an accredited group learning activity under Section 1, as defined by the RCPSC for the maintenance of certification program. The total number of credit hours = 22.5 hours.

ALL PAPER PRESENTATIONS, WORKSHOPS AND PANEL DISCUSSIONS will be recorded for publication on this website and for possible publication in the Journal of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery.

“Ultrasound Techniques for the Head & Neck Surgeon: An Introductory Workshop
Wednesday, May 25, 2011, Victoria Conference Centre, Victoria, BC
This full day introductory workshop is intended for the head and neck surgeon with facilities to incorporate ultrasound as part of their office-based examination of the thyroid and parathyroid glands. This workshop will be broken down into a half day of didactic lectures and a half day of practical hands-on techniques demonstrated by active head and neck surgeons currently using these techniques in their office. The participant will have the opportunity to practice the techniques demonstrated.
